Bore Snakes

GUNNIX bore snakes are pull-through barrel cleaners that combine a bronze brush, a brass weight and a long cotton tail in a single tool. One passes through the barrel and carbon, powder residue and part of the copper fouling come out with the cord. The snake works just as well on the bench at home as it does at the range, pulled straight from a backpack pocket.

How Does a Gun Cleaning Bore Snakes Work?

The principle is simple: the brass weight on the thin nylon end of the cord drops into the chamber, falls through the bore under its own weight and comes out the muzzle. Then you grab the weight and pull the cord toward you. In one pass, three sections work the barrel one after another:

  • The front floss section takes a few drops of solvent or CLP, softens the carbon and loosens it so it does not get smeared further down the bore.

  • The phosphor bronze brush woven into the middle mechanically scrubs carbon and copper off the walls and out of the corners of the rifling.

  • The long woven cotton tail wipes the bore, absorbs the remaining grime and solvent, and leaves a clean surface behind.

Shooters pick pull through bore cleaners for speed: a full cycle takes about 30 seconds, and the result is comparable to several patch passes on a rod. The direction is always breech to muzzle, the same way the bullet travels. That way neither the weight nor the cord touches the muzzle at an angle, and the crown that your accuracy depends on stays intact.

Types of Cleaning Bore Snakes

GUNNIX labels its cords by bore diameter, not by cartridge name. That is only logical: .308 Win, .30-06 and 7.62 NATO share the same bullet diameter and call for the same tool. So a single bore rope gun snake fits several cartridges at once. GUNNIX cleaning bore snakes are grouped by three firearm types.

Rifle Bore Snakes

Suitable for the AR-15 and AR-10, bolt-action hunting rifles, lever guns in .30-30, AK-pattern rifles in 7.62x39 and rifles chambered in .300 Win Mag. On semi-autos, gun cleaning bore snakes feed through the ejection port, so there is no need to pull the upper or strip the gun. Rifles get two models, one for each caliber group:

  • .22 LR, .22 WMR, .223 Rem, 5.56 NATO – one cord for the entire .22 group.

  • .308 Win, .30-06, .30-30, .30 Carbine, .300 Win Mag, 7.62 NATO, 7.62x39 – the .30 group.

  • .50 – a dedicated model for big-bore rifles, where a standard cord would not fill the barrel.

Pistol Bore Snakes

They take up less room in a range bag than a box of patches, so it is easy to keep one next to your ammo. For handguns, GUNNIX offers bore snakes for cleaning guns in three caliber groups:

  • 9mm, .357 Magnum, .357 Sig, .380 ACP, .38 Special – for pistols, revolvers and carbines in these cartridges.

  • .40 S&W, 10mm Auto – for pistols.

  • .44 Magnum, .44 Special, .45 ACP, .45 Colt, .454 Casull – for pistols, revolvers and big-bore lever guns.

On a revolver, drop the weight in from the forcing cone end; on a pistol, feed it through the chamber after a field strip or with the slide locked back.

Shotgun Bore Snakes

Built for the smooth bores of pump-action, semi-auto and break-action shotguns. The floss section is wider here to fill the large bore completely and lift plastic wad residue along with the carbon. The lineup covers 12 gauge, 20 gauge and .410 bore: the first for clays and waterfowl, the second for upland hunting and shooters who prefer lighter recoil, the third for compact shotguns with the softest recoil of all.

The cord is made for quick cleaning right after shooting, while the carbon is still soft. A rod with a brass brush and jag is what you need to remove old copper or lead fouling. Experienced shooters own both: the first saves time, the second brings the barrel back to factory condition.

Yes, but only within the same bore diameter group. A bore snake for .308 also fits .30-06, 7.62 NATO and 7.62x39. A 9mm model, on the other hand, will not touch the walls of a .45 barrel, and a cord that is too thick will jam.

Unload the gun and remove the magazine. Apply a few drops of solvent to the front floss section. Drop the weight into the chamber, wait for it to come out the muzzle and pull the snake through smoothly. After a high round count, make two or three passes.

Go by the condition of the bronze bristles. Once they lie flat and the snake no longer grips the bore walls noticeably, it is time to replace it. That is usually 50-100+ uses. Wash the cord every 3-5 sessions, air dry it and store it in a sealed bag.
