Gun Cleaning All Purpose Brushes (AP Brushes)
Features of AP Brushes
Gun cleaning all purpose brushes look much like a toothbrush, but they carry two working ends on a single plastic handle. One end holds a wide head for flat areas, the other a narrow head for precision work. This tool does not clean the bore: the diameter and shape of the bristles were never meant for that. Its territory is everything else:
- the bolt carrier, the bolt and the locking lugs;
- the slide and frame of a pistol, the ejection port;
- the extractor and firing pin channels;
- the magazine well and the feed ramp;
- the trigger group, the trigger guard, the safety;
- the gas key, the gas tube and muzzle devices.
Two ends on one handle speed up detail work: you scrub the frame with the wide head, flip the brush over and go straight into the extractor channel with the narrow one. Between solvent passes, when the cleaner works for only a few minutes, every second counts.
Service life comes down to how the materials hold up to chemicals. Nylon does not soften from CLP, bronze and stainless steel do not corrode, and the plastic handle keeps its rigidity. The bristles return to their original position every time, so the geometry of the head stays unchanged.
Types of GUNNIX Gun Cleaning All Purpose Brushes
The bristle you need depends on the type of fouling and the material of the surface. The logic is simple: reach for the softer option first and move to a stiffer one only when the previous one could not cope, because a scratch on a finish cannot be undone. GUNNIX offers the following options:
- Nylon. Soft bristles, safe on any surface: polymer frames, Cerakote, blued steel, anodized aluminum, wood stocks. It leaves no marks even on visible parts and does not react with ammonia-based products. Start every session with it, and it will handle most of the fouling on its own.
- Bronze. Medium stiffness and the main tool for internal steel parts. Phosphor bronze is stiffer than nylon yet softer than any steel part of a firearm, so it lifts hardened carbon without leaving scratches. AR-15 owners reach for it when the bolt carrier comes out caked in a solid crust after a few hundred rounds: the bolt tail, the cam pin and the locking lugs will not come clean with CLP alone. On a pistol, that means the feed ramp, the breech face and the slide rail grooves.
- Stainless steel. The most aggressive option, made for carbon baked on under high heat: the AR-15 gas key, the gas tube, muzzle device threading and the blind holes of the gas system after a few thousand rounds. The bristles break up a crust that nylon and bronze pass over without touching, and the narrow head reaches the bottom of grooves and firing pin channels. Service life here is the longest, one to two years.
- AP Brush Metal. Another steel-bristle model, built for heavy work across open surfaces. The dense bristle seating and the wide handle give you leverage as you press, so old carbon comes off the bolt carrier rails and the ribs of larger parts in a few strokes. It also takes down rust and heavy oxidation.
- 3-piece brush set. Nylon, bronze and stainless steel in one pack, each with two working ends. The set brings all three levels of stiffness together, so you match the tool to the part rather than the other way round.
The set is what we recommend to anyone buying AP brushes for the first time: it costs less than three separate brushes and solves the classic beginner's problem, which is trying to clean an entire firearm with one type of bristle.

Every bristle option here is matched to a specific type of surface, and the handle is the same across the models, so your technique does not change when you switch from nylon to bronze. The engineering side is done in the US, while the production sites and the finished batches are checked by our own people.
The brushes are sold individually and in multipacks of 3, 5, 10 and 20. That second option is ideal for clubs, workshops and anyone who shoots every weekend. Payment goes through card, PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay or Shop Pay, and it is easy to add bore brushes, mops and patches for your calibers to the same order.
The condition of the action affects how a firearm runs just as much as the condition of the bore, and the only way to get to it is with a brush of the right stiffness. Pick the bristle for your firearm or order the set on our site. After all, a gun is clean not when the bore shines, but when the whole action is clean.
