.22 Caliber Cotton Bore Mop

Rimfire .22 LR fouling is waxy and sticky - a bore brush breaks it up, but you need something to carry it out. This .22 caliber cotton bore mop absorbs solvent and trapped lead residue from your bore in one pass. Works for .22 LR rimfire and .223/5.56mm centerfire rifles - same bore diameter, same mop.

No caliber gets shot more often - and no caliber accumulates fouling faster between cleanings. A bore mop speeds up the process: solvent pass to pull out loosened fouling, dry pass to check progress, oiled pass to protect. That three-step finish is faster and more thorough than running patches until they come out white. The gun cleaning mop wraps around the entire bore surface instead of touching just the narrow strip a flat patch covers.

100% cotton fibers hold their shape through multiple bore cleaning sessions. Wash with solvent when they get saturated, replace when they thin out. A rifle cleaning mop that earns its place in your .22's cleaning kit.

Does a .22 caliber bore mop also fit .223 and 5.56mm barrels?
Yes. The .22 LR, .223 Remington, and 5.56 NATO all share the same bore diameter (0.224"). One .22 caliber bore mop fits all three. The difference between these cartridges is in the chamber and case - not the bore. For AR-15 chamber cleaning, you need a separate oversized chamber mop, but the bore mop is universal across these calibers.
Is a bore mop better than patches for .22 caliber cleaning?
For applying solvent, the mop is better - it holds more liquid and contacts the entire bore circumference in a single pass. For checking how clean the bore is, patches on a jag win - you can read the discoloration on a white patch. The practical approach for .22: mop with solvent first, then dry patches to inspect. If patches still come out dirty, repeat with the mop.
How often should I replace a .22 bore mop?
When the cotton stops gripping the bore walls. A new mop feels snug as you push it through - there's noticeable resistance. A worn mop slides through freely, which means it's not absorbing fouling or applying solvent effectively. With regular use, expect to replace a bore mop every 15-25 cleaning sessions. Washing between uses extends its life.
Can a bore mop damage my .22 barrel?
No. Cotton is softer than any barrel steel, and bore mops have no abrasive components. Unlike bore brushes (which are also barrel-safe), a mop can't even theoretically scratch the bore. The only thing that can go wrong is leaving cotton fibers behind if the mop is worn out - which is a nuisance, not damage.
What solvent should I use with a bore mop for .22 LR?
A: For .22 LR rimfire, a standard bore cleaner handles the lead and wax fouling these rounds leave behind. You don't typically need a copper solvent unless you're shooting .223 jacketed ammunition through the same bore. Apply solvent to the mop, run it through, let it sit for a minute, then follow with the brush. The mop pre-soaks the fouling so the brush works more effectively.
