Shotgun bores are big - and a 12 gauge bore snake is built to match. The oversized woven floss section fills the 0.729" bore completely, and the embedded bronze brush scrubs plastic wad fouling, carbon, and lead deposits in a single pull-through from breech to muzzle. Break open your shotgun, drop the brass weight through the chamber, pull the cord out the muzzle, and the barrel is clean enough for the next round of clays or the next morning's hunt.

Shotgun shooters put more shells through in one session than most rifle shooters fire in a month. A day of sporting clays can mean 100–200 rounds, and every one of them deposits wad residue and carbon inside the barrel. Nobody wants to spend thirty minutes with a rod and brush after a fun day of shooting - and that's exactly why bore snakes exist. Apply CLP to the floss section, run it through twice, and the bore is maintained. The gun cleaning takes less time than breaking down the shotgun itself.

Experienced waterfowl and upland hunters keep a bore snake in their vest pocket for field bore cleaning. If the muzzle touches mud or snow, one pull clears the barrel instantly - a safety step that could prevent a dangerous obstruction. Washable and reusable across dozens of sessions. When the floss wears thin, replace it. Until then, this is the fastest gun cleaning tool a shotgunner can own.

How does a 12 gauge bore snake clean a shotgun barrel?
Drop the brass weight through the barrel from the breech end. Pull the cord from the muzzle. The snake passes through in three sections: the leading floss applies solvent and loosens surface fouling, the embedded bronze brush scrubs carbon and plastic wad residue, and the wide trailing floss section wipes the bore clean. One pull replaces the brush-mop-patch sequence of traditional rod cleaning.
Will a bore snake remove plastic wad fouling from my 12 gauge?
Light wad fouling - yes. The bronze brush section scrubs loose wad residue effectively with solvent. Heavy or baked-on wad fouling - not fully. If you shoot high-volume clays or use heavy wad loads, the bore snake handles post-session maintenance, but periodic deep cleaning with a dedicated bore brush and wad-dissolving solvent is still necessary.
Can I use a bore snake on a semi-auto or pump shotgun?
Yes. Open the action, drop the weighted end through the chamber, and pull from the muzzle. On pump-action shotguns, lock the action open first. On semi-autos, pull back the bolt and drop the weight through the ejection port. Over/under and side-by-side shotguns are the easiest - break open and drop through. The bore snake works with any action type.
How is a bore snake different from a bore mop?
A bore snake is a complete one-pass system - it has a built-in brush, solvent-carrying floss, and wiping section all in one pull-through cord. A bore mop is a single-purpose tool that attaches to a cleaning rod and only absorbs solvent or fouling. The bore snake is faster but less versatile. The mop gives you more control over each step of the cleaning process.
How often should I use a bore snake on my shotgun?
After every shooting session is ideal. A quick bore snake pass after shooting prevents fouling from hardening in the bore between thorough cleanings. For clay shooters putting 100+ rounds through in a session, a bore snake pass during lunch break keeps the barrel in good shape. Even if you plan to deep-clean at home later, a bore snake pass before the drive home makes the full cleaning easier.
