What does a 5/16-27 to 8-32 adapter do?

Why are shotgun and rifle cleaning rod threads different?

Rifle and pistol bores are smaller, and the finer 8-32 threads keep the accessories compact enough to pass through tight bores. Will this adapter strip my threads or come loose during cleaning?
