Should I clean a .22 rimfire barrel regularly?
Rimfire barrels are different from centerfire barrels. Many competitive .22 LR shooters clean sparingly because a thin layer of lead fouling can actually improve accuracy by smoothing microscopic imperfections. However, when accuracy drops - typically after several hundred rounds - a bronze bore brush with solvent clears the buildup and resets the bore. Don't ignore cleaning entirely, just don't overdo it.
Does a .22 caliber bore brush also fit .223 and 5.56mm?
Yes. The .22 LR, .223 Remington, and 5.56 NATO all share the same bore diameter - 0.224 inches. One .22 caliber bore brush cleans all three. The difference is in the chamber and overall cartridge length, not the bore. For chamber cleaning on .223/5.56 rifles, you need a separate chamber brush sized for the AR-15 chamber.
Can I run a bore brush back and forth through the barrel?
You can with a bronze brush - it will not harm the bore either direction. Some shooters prefer one-direction-only strokes (breech to muzzle), letting the brush exit before pulling the rod back. Others run it back and forth for convenience. Either method works. The key is keeping the brush wet with solvent so it loosens fouling instead of just pushing it around.
What is the best bore brush material for a .22?
Bronze handles the lead and wax fouling from .22 LR rimfire, and it also tackles the copper jacket fouling from .223 centerfire. Nylon is gentler and useful with copper solvents, but it does not match bronze for breaking loose baked-on lead deposits. For a .22 that sees regular use, bronze is the practical choice.
Do I need both a bore brush and a bore mop for my .22?
